"Pambassador" Day 6 in Chengdu

Hi everyone!

This morning, we cleaned the enclosure of Si Yuan, a cute Panda with
white fur on her hands that looks like she's wearing white gloves and
gave her some bamboo shoots for breakfast.
As I was throwing the bamboo shoots for her,
I lost control and some of them hit her.
She jumped up and seemed like she was so
surprised.

Si Yuan, enjoying her breakfast with
all the bamboo on her stomach. So cute!

Afterwards, we built platforms for Pandas!
It's like a gungle gym, and our team added swings for Pandas.
Just imagine, pandas don't go hanging out for drinks with
friends like we do. They stay here all day, and we wanted to
make the platform confortable to play with, and we hope that they will enjoy it!

Hiding the nails with ropes so that the Pandas don't get hurt

We also learned about 8 kinds of Bamboo,
to be able to recognize them all.
Some of them are Panda's favorite, and
some of them are just for decoration.
It's so hard to tell the difference though,
they are all BAMBOO. We tried to
figure out the differences, and it was quite
interesting.

Expert telling us about bamboo

We also made Panda cakes. They look like the
Chinese traditional cakes 月餅 that we often eat around the
I hope they like it! It is made of
wheat, corn and other nutritious ingredients.

Panda cakes. They look delicious, but they don't have taste.
It's like brown whole wheat bread, maybe good with
butter or cheese!

More to come tomorrow!
And we have to prepare for our final stage that will be held on
the 29th Sep. Staying up until late at night and studying in my room
just reminds me of exams at college...

See you tomorrow!

“Pambassador” Day 5 in Chengdu

Hi everyone!
Today,  we went out to have some cultural exchange
and interaction with the local people in Chengdu!
No Pandas today, just meeting the local citezens.

First thing in the morning, I got out of bed without enough sleep as usual,
but then realized that I couldn’t open my eyes!
I got stung by a mosquito or whatever during my sleep,
and it hurt so much! So, we went to the hospital to have some cure.
(I took that as a chance to promote this project to the doctors and nurses though!!)

On the way, we found local ladies dancing with their fans,
and we decided to promote “Project Panda” to them.
I danced with them and had my T shirt signed all over!
They were friendly, and wished me luck and the success of this project.
Some of them even told me that they have visited Japan many times,
and that they love Japan!
Dancing with the local BEAUTIFUL women (and some men)

Then we had lunch over at my host families place.
Grandma made us some Chinese dumplings,
and it’s always nice to have local food, she is a great cook!!

Grandma's handmade dumplings

In the afternoon, we went to the kid’s school to promote the project,
and they seemed excited about all the “Panda thing” going on.
I did a short introduction about why I am here,
of course “TO SAVE THE PANDAS!” and spoke a little bit of Chinese.
My host mother translated my Japanese to Chinese.
The kids were awesome, they really love Pandas,
and were so excited about this project.

Then we went to visit my host dad’s lab,
where he works on research for the conservation of nature (plants and animals).
And today  was my host dad’s Birthday today,
and we had a party with the family with Chinese Birthday cakes.
Picture of my host family's dog. SOOOOO CUTE!!

I had  dinner with my host family at a wonderful seafood restaurant.
Oh by the way, they're not fighting, they're dancing!

So, today was promoting day.
Tomorrow we will be back at the Chengdu Panda Base
after 2 days without meeting Pandas, and I am so looking forward to it!

See you tomorrow!

And just one thing.

The Japanese media "Fuji TV" came all the way from Japan,
and they are following us from tomorrow to shoot videos of us
working with Pandas. I will let you know when it will go on air.
With my face like a phantom. Really my eyes are just like monsters!!
Don't miss it!

"Pambassador" Day 4 in Chengdu

Hi everyone!

Today we went to the Panda Field Research Center in Du Jiang Yan.

Panda Field Research Center

This place is still under construction,
and is basically a place to train captive Pandas
to release into the wild in the future.

The main purpose of breeding Pandas and raising them
in Chengdu Panda Base is not just to increase their numbers,
but their final goal is to release them into wild life again
so that they can increase their numbers by themselves
like they did in the past.
I think that we have to find so many solutions in order to achieve this task,
but the facility is a place to train Pandas so that they can eventually
live just as they do in the wild.

The first captive Panda was originally found around this area,
and many wild Pandas really do live in this forest
which means that the environment and climate
is suitable for the captive Pandas to have trainings.

Captive Pandas are planned to be trained in 3 steps
before being released and the 3 steps are as follows:

1. Entrance of Valley
They will bring 2 pandas from Chengdu Panda Base.
This will be the adaptation area, where they help
the Pandas to get used to the local weather
and environment to be released in the wild in the future.
The human and Pandas will have interaction with each other in many ways.

2. Semi Wild Area
This is a place where only a few human can have interaction with the Pandas.
The captive Pandas have lost the capabilitiy to live
in wild after their long life in Chengdu Panda Base,
and their main purpose is to
・Teach them how to choose and find food, such as bamboos and others by themselves.
・Teach them what kind of water they can/ cannot drink
・Teach them the Friendly animals / Dangerous animals.

This area is to let Pandas take a step forward from Captive environment to Wild environment.

3. Totally Wild Area
There will be no interactions between human and Pandas.
Only researchers and specialists can enter the place
in order to know the results.
Pandas get to find food for themselves,
and live on their own without the help of human.
(The section is still a part of the Field Research Center)

After these process, the Pandas will finally be released into the real Wild.

The problem is, that there have actually been
a few captive Pandas that had been released in the past,
but none of them came up with a satisfactory result.
They have died after a few months,
some because of fights with other Pandas,
and some because of other reasons that I do not know.
It shows that breeding, raising and releasing Pandas is the process
to save them, but the task is so difficult, and will surely take
many years to accomplish.

After the brief introduction of the Field Research Center,
we went to plant bamboo for the Pandas!!
Planting bamboo with host family!!

12 Pambassadors have planted bamboo for the Pandas!

Unfortunately, today we did not get to meet any Pandas,
so I will upload pictures and videos from Day 1-3 as soon as I can!

"Pambassador" Day 3 in Chengdu

Today, we had so much to do!

1. Clean enclosures and feed the Pandas!!

My team mates, Ali from Sweden and Chriszelda from South Africa!

In the morning, we got into groups to clean the enclosure.
I got to clean 雄浜's room!!
He’s the Panda that was born in Wakayama from the "Mickey Mouse" family,
mother is 梅梅and father is 永明.

The first thing we did was to clean the room
and weigh all the left over’s in order to know that
he is healthy and has good appetite.
Then we cleaned the facility with water and scrubbed the whole room.
雄浜 was watching me across the window from outside while I was
cleaning the room, and it seems that he recognizes me!
I’ve seen him before in Wakayama, and after all the years,
we met in Chengdu which is amazing.

雄浜watching me through the window

We fed him his favorite apples and bamboo shoots,
and each time I called his name in Japanese,
he looks up at me, and Ali and Chriszelda were saying that
he still understands Japanese! 雄浜is a clever boy, and he is definitely bilingual!!

雄浜looking up as I called his name in Japanese

雄浜 eating his favorite bamboo shoot

We were also taught how to keep diaries of each Pandas
every single day on how much appetite they have and
to make sure everything is OK.

2. Brief lecture on Pandas

We learned about the distribution of Pandas in history and current,
how the Chengdu Panda Base started in 1987,
the technique in raising twin babies (the switching system)
and Genome Resource Bank.
As for wild Pandas, it is said that only 40% of babies grow to bewcome adults.
The reasons are that when mother Pandas give birth to a child,
they don’t eat nor drink for several months
because babie's don’t have the ability to keep their temperature,
and mothers have to hold them in their arm 24 hours.
If the babies are abandoned from mothers for some reason,
they will die easily. Captive Pandas that are born in Chengdu Panda Base,
take the "switching system".
While one baby is being fed and taken care of from their mother,
the other is kept in incubators to keep them warm and safe.
Every few hours the babies are switched,
and the Panda keepers make sure that
both the twins are fed with mother’s milk.
Since 1990, twin babies have been able to survive
more and more in the Panda Base, with all the experience.

3. Cleaning nursery enclosures and preparing fresh bamboos.
The nursery is a place where five 2 year old Pandas are kept in together.
The Panda keepers clean the enclosure every day,
prepare fresh bamboos, and feed them
with their favorite Panda cakes and apples.
We gave the Pandas a shower and prepared fresh bamboos (heavy!!)
and fed them with apples and Panda cakes (full of nutrition).

Carrying out the left over bamboo

Feeding the Pandas with their favorite apples and Panda cakes

4. Interactive presentation from the WWF.

The main topic was the current status of wild Pandas,
the Wild Panda habitats and population,
Panda distribution area in the past and current,
threats to Panda and habitats,
what WWF does to save the wild Pandas,
and what we Pambassadors can do to save wild Pandas.
The WWF have been doing monitoring and patrolling
of Pandas and other animals, and have also given education on environment to the people.

More to come tomorrow!

"Pambassador" Day 2 in Chengdu

Today was a great day, having been able to see
so many Pandas in one day!
This morning, we all gathered at the hotel lobby at 7:30.
Left hotel and headed to Chengdu Panda Base!!!!!

Last night, it took me about an hour and a half just updating my blogs,
and therefore I only had 2 hours sleep, I skipped breakfast this morning,
and was starving to death until lunch time.

Things we did today.

1. Orientation

Introduction of the primary responsibilities, basic knowledge and safety rules
when entering the Panda enclosures. Brief introduction of Pandas.

The Chengdu Panda Base was established 1987 for the means of
conservation, education, and research. We learned that at that time,
they had many difficult issues that they had to solve, such as nature mating
and artificial insemination, disease prevention, genetic research,
nutrition research, and so on. In the past few years,
with all the hard work and experience, the Panda Base has made
a great success on breeding and raising Pandas,
with all the effort from the staffs who work for this facility.

2. Welcome ceremony in front of the Chinese media.

Short speech from 12 Pambassadors in front of cameras!!
Susan, one of the staff did a great job in translating English
into Chinese for the media, it was her first time to have such a hard task
in such short notice, but she just did great!!

3. Had lunch with host families.

I was starving, and enjoyed the meal.
However, it made me so sleepy after lunch… took a short nap
and prepared for the activities that were planned for the afternoon.

4. Search for Giant Pandas!!

We had a brief lecture on how to distinguish each
Pandas from another, such as their behaviors and appearances,
and then went to see the real Pandas to verify each ones we learned about.
I became so emotional when I saw the Pandas that were born in Japan
and came to Chengdu, and I cried!! They seemed to be so healthy and happy!!
It was sad that they didn't recognize me saying out their names in Japanese though....
Jerome, one of my Pambassador friend has been all the way
to Wakayama Adventure World from Belgium,
and he even knows their Japanese names and has many pictures of them!!!
He came by me and took care of me when I just couldn’t get control
of my emotions, thanks Jerome! It was so nice to know that you love
Japanese Pandas, and you care about them so much!!
It was touching, and I really enjoyed talking with you!

隆浜 from Japan!! Born 8th Sep, 2003

秋浜 from Japan!! Looks like Mickey Mouse!! Twin younger brother of 隆浜。

Children Pandas enjoying their Panda milk!

And I also had another exciting experience today. I finally met Ms. Abe,
the only Japanese who work for the Chengdu Panda Base.
She has given me so much influence through Japanese documentary TV programs,
and I had always wanted to meet her!

Ms. Abe who works for Chengdu Panda Base.

Children Pandas being fed with apples and Panda Cakes!

5. Brief lecture on research and conservation at the Panda Base.

Learned about nature mating problems and the solution, and pseudo pregnancy.

Time flies so quickly, and there are so many things we should learn
in order to save the Pandas. This cannot be achieved in one day,
and I hope we will experience more and more to share with our
friends and people around the world. The reality is not always on the bright side,
but to see so many people being involved with the conservation of Pandas,
I hope the problems will be saved one day in the near future.

"Pambassador" Day 1 in Chengdu

Hi I’m Yumiko Kajiwara from Tokyo Japan.

First of all I would like to thank everyone who have devoted
so much effort for this Project, and to all the people in Chengdu
who have given us such a warm welcome.
It is a great honor to be selected as one of the top 12 PAMBASSADORS
and to be here in Chengdu, and I hope this will be an experience that
I will never forget for the rest of my life.

Today was our first day being involved with the “Project Panda”.
We all gathered in Chengdu at 4 o’clock,
and had a brief meeting at the restaurant in our hotel.

We had dinner at “Old House” (老房子) and had lovely spicy Sichuan cuisine.

Picture of the Top 12 Pambassadors! (One missing!!)

It’s so amazing that about a month ago we didn’t even know about this Project,
but then after the video interview, voting and everything, we’re finally in Chengdu,
having Chinese dinner together! We’ve seen the video interview so many times;
it was like we’ve already known each other well!!

Sichuan Cuisine

After dinner, there was a welcome ceremony,
with many entertainments by the local people.
“Changing faces” is one of the popular entertainments in this region,
and was awesome; they did the face of a DORAEMON,
the Japanese popular cartoon character!

"Changing face" of DORAEMON!!

We made a short speech for the local media on stage.
I did mine in Chinese, I hope everyone understood what I was saying!

Each participant has local host families that will
take care of us during our stay in Chengdu.
Mine is wonderful.
A German father, Chinese grandma, a mother and
two beautiful children the age of 10 and 6.
They will give us the support in order to know better
about China, Chengdu and about Pandas.

My wonderful host family on stage singing a famous poem by 李白

The hotel area is full of posters and panels for the “Project Panda”
and shows how important this project is to the people in China
and to the people around the world.

Posters of Project Panda

I have been told from a Chinese friend of mine that
the Project is already big news among the Chinese people.
I hope this project will succeed with all the support
from  local people and participants.

Tomorrow we are going to the Chengdu Panda Base,
and hopefully we will meet the Pandas!!
I will keep you updated on our activities.
The "Project Panda" to save the endangered Pandas starts from
tomorrow, so stay tuned!

Susan

SONY α NEX-5

Yumiko

I have loved GIANT PANDAS form since I was a little girl.
Thanks to the members of this project that have been giving
their full commitment for the success of this project and many friends who have
given me big support, I have been selected as one of the top 12 PAMBASSADOR,

6 PAMBASSADORS will be selected in the final stage, to be the
world's spokesperson for the protection of GIANT PANDAS.
Our main mission will be to share our wonderful experience with
many people around the world, to let more people become aware of
the reality and dangers that GIANT PANDAS are facing.

Many people know that GIANT PANDAS are cute having their
lovable appearance. And many people know that they are endangered animals.
But when it comes to the reality and dangers that the GIANT PANDAS
are really truly facing,it’s sometimes so hard to accept it, and we try not to face it.
If we only knew the bright side, it would be much easier for us to live along.
But now I know a small part of the reality, and have a strong desire to face it
in order to save the GIANT PANDAS, wild life and the beauty of this planet.

As one of the top 12 PAMBASSADORS, I would love to share my experience
and ideas through my blogs. I hope you can come visit my blog, and if you have
