Bi Li and Xian Nu arrive safe at Ueno Zoo 21 Feb 2011

21 February 2011 was a special day
for the Japanese citizen.
Two Giant Pandas
比力Bi Li (Male, born born 2005 Aug 16)
and 仙女Xian Nu (Female born 2005 Jul 3)
arrived at Ueno Zoo from
Ya'an Giant Panda Conservation Center
in Central China.
They left Ya'an late 20th and arrived at
New Tokyo international airport
a few minutes before estimated time of arrival
on All Nippon Airways Co., (ANA/全日空)
NH960 Boeing 767-300ER airplane called
"FLY! PANDA" with a panda shaped pattern
on its body. Many media and press awaited
their arrival at the airport to catch a glimpse
of the two Giant Pandas.

“FLY! PANDA” airplane was specially made in
2007 for the 20th anniversary of airline service
between Japan and China, and to mark the
35th anniversary of establishing
diplomatic relations between the two countries.

“FLY! PANDA” airplane
slowly approaches the parking area.

There are Pandas hanging on
both sides of the airplane,
which makes it cuter than ever!!

Flying on this airplane
is one of my dreams.
It must be a dream to
all Panda lovers around the world.

And the cart that carries the
two Giant Panda cage
is also designed like Pandas.
This was made around
the same time as the
“FLY! PANDA” airplane.
It even has ears.

ANA staff meets the
2 Giant Pandas
with a Panda costume.

The Giant Pandas are in these two boxes.

Staff at the airport opens
the box and shows the
two Giant Pandas to the media and press.

ANA gave me the great opportunity to
hand out Panda souvenirs to the guests
that were on this airplane on this special day.
How lucky they were to be on the
same airplane as Pandas!!

According to the press release from ANA,
they will launch a direct flight from
New Tokyo International Airport to Chengdu
from 19 Jun 2011. It will be far easier for the
Japanese customers to visit Chengdu,
not only for business but also for tourism
and to meet the Giant Pandas at
Chengdu Panda Base.

The two Giant Pandas seemed tired after the
long distance travel, but the keepers from
Ya'an and Ueno Zoo attended the Giant Pandas
on the airplane to make sure they were safe.

After meeting  the two Giant Pandas at the airport,
I rushed to Ueno Zoo to meet the Pandas there too.

The truck that carried Bi Li and Xian Nu arrived at
Ueno Zoo around 11:40pm.
Many local citizens were outside the gate of Ueno Zoo
to welcome the two Giant Pandas they had been waiting for.
As the gate to the zoo opened, the truck slowly appeared
in front of all the media and press.
70 companies and 193 people were from the
media and press this day, waiting in the cold.

There were interviews from Ueno Zoo Manager
Teruyuki Komiya and veterinarian Tatsuko Hara
about Bi Li and Xian Nu's behaviors.
Teruyuki Komiya stated that their goal is not just
reproduction and breeding. They hope to see
Pandas born in Ueno Zoo go back to
the wild in the future, in order to help the
conservation of wild Giant Pandas.

According to the news the next day,
Bi Li was nervous and crying all the time
after arriving at his new home,
but Xian Nu soon started to eat bamboo
staying calm in her new Panda House.

Bi Li and Xian Nu will have new names from 40,000
suggestions already applied from the public.
The two Giant Pandas will be shown in public after
a month observation by specialists.

(I will upload videos I took of the whole interview soon.)

2011 Feb 20 @ Ueno Zoo

Hello everyone!

Today I visited Ueno Zoo to see the Panda House.

比力 (Bi Li) and 仙女 (Xian Nu) will leave
雅安(Ya'an) 碧峰峡(BiFengXia) Panda Base
early morning on Feb 21(Mon)
(↑Sorry for the mistake,
the Pandas have already left BiFengXia,
according to the news in Japan.)
They will fly from Chengdu to Shanghai,
and then fly from Shanghai to Narita
on ANA NH960. Hopefully the plane will arrive at
Narita Airport around 9PM,
and then at Ueno Zoo around 11:30PM.
It will be a long trip for the Pandas,
and I hope they will arrive safely!

The Panda House is not open to the public yet,
so I would like to show you some pictures I took today.

This is the entrance part of the Panda section.
Cute Pandas everywhere! Children would love this!

There is an area where visitors can
put their head inside this
"Panda face hole" and take great pictures!

This is the First Panda House.
Underneath the stone bed near the window,
there is a heating system, and when the Pandas
feel cold, they can come to sleep here.

Second Panda House.

Third Panda House

Forth Panda House

This is the passage that leads to the Panda House.
Many visitors are expected around the Panda House,
and we would walk down this place
to get to the front line to meet the Pandas!
I wonder how crowded the place will be,
and how long we can stay in front of the window
to watch the Pandas. We'll see!

This is the entrance of the Kitchen.

Today the keepers were preparing
vegetables and fruits for the tapirs (バク).
Food for the Pandas will also
be prepared in this kitchen.

Tomorrow I will be at Narita Airport
and Ueno Zoo to be there for their arrival.
So excited!!!

Ueno Pandas

Hello everyone!

It has been announced that Ueno Pandas will arrive in Tokyo on Feb 21.
Today I would like to upload some pictures that I took at
雅安(Ya'an) 碧峰峡(BiFengXia) Panda Base on 2010 Dec 3.

This is 比力(BiLi, Male), born Aug 16 2005.

He is a shy boy, and walks away when too many people come to watch him.

Walking around waiting for bamboo.

"My favorite bamboo at last!"
Looks happy with all the bamboo around him.

This is 仙女(XianNu, Female), born Jul 3 2005.

She seems to be friendly, and came to say Hi to us.

Looks like she is smiling! Cute round face.

Bites as much bamboo as she can.

"HAHAHA, delicious!"

This is the picture we took together.

This is BiLi's father. (He is not coming to Tokyo)
霊霊 (LingLing Male) , born Aug 25 1995.

Cute "grandpa" look.

All the Japanese Panda fans are looking forward to their arrival,
and I hope the Pandas have a safe trip to Tokyo!

See you soon at Ueno!

2011 Feb 10 @ Beijing Zoo

Hello everyone!

On 2011 Feb 10, I visited the Beijing Zoo again.
It was snowing in Beijing and the Pandas were very excited!

This is 萌萌 Meng Meng.
"Today I feel like running around! I love snow!!"

As we were watching her running around,
she started to climb a small tree.
There are many large trees, but this small one is her favorite.

"HAHAHA, I'm on top of the world!"

"I have to be careful not to fall down though"

"Woo, this is tricky!"

"Is everyone watching me? I'm doing a performance for you!"

"Few, glad I made it to the bottom"

She was very active, running around and
entertaining in front of many tourists. Everyone was
smiling and laughing, especially the kids. (And me of course)

Then the keeper fed her with carrots.

She looks so happy with her favorite carrot!

After eating all the carrots, she climbed the platform and
started to take a nap.

Sweet dreams Meng Meng.

This is Gu Gu running and rolling around in the snow.
He loves snow too.

These are the 3 year old Olympic Pandas from Wolong.
They are covered with snow because
they play together and roll around so much.

I will upload pictures of Bi Li and Xian Nu
(Pandas that are coming to Tokyo next week) soon.
