Day 7 @ Chengdu Panda Base as Pambassador

Hello everyone!

This morning 幸浜 was eating bamboo shoot when I arrived at his enclosure.
Many tourists were watching him with a smile on their face.
I was delighted to share my infromation on 幸浜 and 秋浜
with tourists from abroad.

Brought him inside for some treats. 幸浜 saying "Hi" to us.

Today we made holes in bamboo and put apples inside to feed 幸浜.
A kind of game that we had prepared for him.

"What is this? How should I play with it?"

"Smells of apples, but I can't see anything..."

"Or shoud I eat this bamboo??"

Rolling the bamboo to see if it works.

But then he realized that he couldn't take out the apples...
All the apples just fell on the ground, and unfortunately he didn't notice them.
He got so angry, and came running towards us!
He was fast!!!

Then began to act like a child.
This tree is too small for you, 幸浜...

"I'm going to break this tree!"
And this went on for 10 minutes after he became tired and went to sleep.

In the afternoon, the vet came for a blood test for 幸浜.
This is just for a normal health check, and according to the vet,
all the Pandas in Chengdu Panda Base are being tested
every 2-3 months. Of course, if they have any other problem,
the vet takes care of them accordingly.
幸浜 was a good boy just as he was at the trainings we had done for him.

The vet rubs 幸浜's arm, and finds the vessels at once!
She was professional!

She is the vet in Chengdu Panda Base.
She was doing the same blood test for 5 Panads today.

And this is 秋浜's feces for today.
Lots of apples that wasn't digested.

This is the one with lots of bamboo.

It seems that during my lunch time 秋浜 had fun outside
rolling around beside his pond and breaking lots of trees.
It has only been 2 days after we had given him a shower,
now he is so dirty... but he is still cute!

It took him about 10 minutes to enjoy them all.

We have also been experiencing many laboratory work
for the past few days, such as the DNA and Hormone testings,
and I would like to share these information with everyone
in the weekend.

Day 6 @ Chengdu Panda Base as Pambassador

Hi everyone!

幸浜 welcomed me in the morning. Too lazy to even get out of bed.

He loves this tree and does it every day.

Placing bamboo on platform and other areas
to give him some exersize.

Panda feces! The light colored ones are from bamboo shoot,
and the dark colored ones are from bamboo.

The dark colored feces have a nice smell like bamboo!
I'm not tasting it, just to let you know...

This is also part of his exersize, to keep him
standing up for a while.

And then we did a training for 幸浜with apples in ice to see if
he can find and take out his food from ice. This is to
train the pandas so that they can find food in winter in the wild.

"Ah, what is this?? Is it something fun??"

"Hahaha, this is fun!!"

"And I finally took out the apple!!"

"Don't you think I'm clever?"

"And they even gave me Panda cake because I was a good boy!"

And we did the training of blood testing again.

With all the CDTV (Chengdu TV) crew around.

"This ice tastes of honey!! Yummy!"

And carried all the left over bamboo from his enclosure.
They only eat fresh bamboo, and these are the bamboos I gave him this morning.

In the front is 幸浜 and in the back we can see 秋浜
in the nextdoor enclosure.
According to their keeper,
秋浜 is always active and 幸浜 is always watching...
Today 幸浜 was fast asleep, and 秋浜 was drinking water
when I left their enclosures.

10月12日 成都パンダ繁殖研究基地研修5日目

日本の皆様こんにちは！
久しぶりに日本語で本日の活動報告をしたいと思います。

英語でご覧いただいている皆様、内容が重複するところも
あります。すみません。

中国の国慶節の大型連休が終了し、
ようやく10月8日から成都パンダ繁殖基地での
トレーニングがスタートしました。
私は日本の和歌山アドベンチャーワールドで
生まれ育った秋浜（2003年9月8日生まれの双子の弟）と
幸浜（2005年8月23日生まれ）のお世話をすることになりました。
二人は同じ両親の子です。父親は永明（えいめい）、
母親は梅梅（めいめい）で成都では隣同士で暮らしています。

毎日午前中にそれぞれのお部屋と外の遊び場を掃除し、
パンダの糞を集めて重量を測ります。これにより、
パンダの健康状態が把握出来るということで、
色や形、何が含まれているか等入念にチェックします。
パンダはもともと大昔肉食動物だったため、
竹と筍を食べるようになった今でも
消化機能が複雑なのです。食べたものの20％も
吸収することが出来ないため、ほとんどの竹と筍は
そのまま糞となって出てしまいます。
そのような事情もあり、起きている時間の大半を
食事に費やすのです。生命を維持するために
必要不可欠な行動で、効率の悪さを考えると
大変だなーと思ってしまいます。
飼育担当者は毎日記録を取りながら、健康管理をしています。

今日も秋浜の大好きな筍をあげました。
待ちきれないようで、可愛い声で鳴いていました。
秋浜は映画「パンダフルライフ」をご覧になった方は
ご存知かと思いますが、兄の隆浜の耳の毛を
かじって毟り取ってしまったいたずらっ子なのですが、
8歳になった今でも甘えん坊のようです。
大人のパンダは通常あまり鳴き声を発しないのですが、
彼は嬉しい時、特によく鳴きます。可愛いです。

そして静かに水を飲みます。犬のようにバシャバシャこぼさず、
吸うように飲むんです。暴れたい気分の時は、
この重い水飲みをひっくり返して遊びます。
かなりの力持ちです。

飲み終わると、筍をもっとくれ！！とせがみます。
可愛い顔をすれば貰えるとわかっているみたいです。
実際、可愛いからあげてしまうのですが・・・。

午後は、リスクの伴う麻酔を使用せずに
血液検査をするための訓練をしました。
ちゃんと手を出してバーを握っています。
お利巧さんです。
カメラ目線も慣れたものです。

ベテラン飼育担当者のLi Hanさんはこんなに
パンダに近づけるのです。手を触ったりたたいたりしても
秋浜が動かないよう、しっかり愛情と時間をかけて訓練をします。

私もお手伝いさせてもらいました。

そして、訓練終了後はシャワーで身体を綺麗にしてあげました。
顔に水がかかるのを嫌がるようで、何度もブルブルっと
身体をさせて水を掃っていました。

そして、寝る時はやっぱり甘えん坊さんみたいな
格好で可愛らしいポーズで寝ます。

ここ数日秋浜と幸浜のお世話をしている中で、
彼らの特徴が日本にいた時とあまり変わっていないようで
嬉しく思いました。日本語と中国語が理解出来るという
意味ではバイリンガルです。
そして、二人ともやはり他のパンダに比べてやんちゃです。
飼育担当者に、「中国のパンダと日本生まれのパンダの違い」
について聞いてみたところ、日本の子達は生まれた時から
伸び伸びと育っているせいか、皆大人になってもやんちゃで
活発だと言っていました。これも、和歌山で沢山の愛情を
受けて育ったおかげなのだと思います。

明日はまた幸浜についても書きたいと思います。
幸浜の外の遊び場は昨日から工事中で、
新しい木製の遊び場を建設中です。完成が楽しみです！！
