Vacation @ Chengdu Panda Base-8

Hello everyone!

Today NiNi was the one crying all the time
instead of 迎迎(IngIng)! Since they are twins,
it's hard to identify...

Not a good picture, but NiNi came SO CLOSE!!
Couldn't focus.

奇福(QiFu) licking her hands with Panda Cake crumbs.
Today NiNi didn't eat any Panda Cakes,
and instead 奇福(QiFu) and 迎迎(IngIng) were so happy to
have extras fot themselves!

隆浜(Long Bang) doing... whatever you can imagine.

Today he was licking the honey for a LONG TIME, without
eating any Panda Cakes. But as you can see,
the keepers are devoting so much time on 隆浜(Long Bang),
cutting them and putting honey all over so that he can eat them...

He also didn't want Panda Cakes today.
Just a tiny bite.

All the Panda Cakes left.
秋浜(Qiu Bang) and 幸浜(Xing Bang) would go crazy
if they saw these Panda Cakes!!!
秋浜(Qiu Bang) and 幸浜(Xing Bang)
would eat them in seconds!

And that's why 隆浜 is so light...

迎迎(IngIng) refused to go on the scale this week, so they are
doing it at another occasion, which is quite normal with
young Pandas.

幸浜(Xing Bang) was also asleep...

Vacation @ Chengdu Panda Base-7

Hello everyone!
Today I went to the number 14 in the morning to clean
幸浜(Xing Bang) and 秋浜(Qiu Bang)'s enclosures.

秋浜(Qiu Bang) saying "Hi" with a pretty face as usual.

"HHHHIIIIII"

I'm still sleepy today...

秋浜(Qiu Bang)'s feces. Nice Bamboo smell!

Today it was 6.8kg. It was around 17kg when they were
eating bamboo shoot, but now this is normal.

幸浜(Xing Bang) saying "Hi"

In the morning, he found a bamboo skin,
and started to play with it.

"Can I eat this??"

"Is this icecream??"

In the afternoon, we gave 幸浜(Xing Bang) his favorite
Panda Cake outside. We used the
handmade fishing rod to make him do some exersize.
(No pictures, because I was doing it!)

幸浜(Xing Bang) splits the Panda Cake in half to enjoy.

"HAHAHA, yummy!!"

And then suddenly something interesting happened.
One of the tourist dropped her hat in 幸浜's enclosure
by mistake! 幸浜 found it right away, and no matter
how many time we tried to call him to come inside,
he ignored us and started to play with it!

"Can I play with it?"
(Probablly looking up to me for permission...)

"I'm playing with it anyway!
Do I cover my face with this?"

"Or should I smell it first?"

"Maybe it's a hat!"

"Doesn't fit me though..."

"Is this the right way to play with it?"

"It's MINE!!"

He left the hat in 15 minutes.
However the hat was wet and dirty,
and the poor tourist gave up and left...

But I would like to say to the all the
Panda lovers, animal lovers and tourists that
come to the Panda Base (or other zoos of course),

"PLEASE BE CAREFUL OF YOUR BELONGINGS!
IT CAN SOMETIMES HURT ANIMALS!"

"Now I'm done with this!"

Hello everyone!

Guess who this is?
幸浜(Xing Bang)? 秋浜(Qiu Bang)?
NO, this is MeiLan!
I didn't know she can do this expression!

迎迎(IngIng) doing his dance
with his pretty face.

Although he's still 2 years old,
he has long and sharp nails!
That's why he can climb trees so fast!

奇福(QiFu) pushing 迎迎(IngIng)
to draw my attention.

After feeding them their favorite apples,
they stayed inside for a while,
waiting for some more apples! The keeper
had to give them extra apples to make them
go outside!

They enjoyed fresh bamboo outside.

迎迎(IngIng) followed her too.
"We know it's fun to eat lying down!
If people did this it would be
bad manner,but we're cute doing this,
look at all the tourists watching us
with a smile on their face!"

パンダの厳しい現実について

以前ブログを読んでいただいている方から
パンダについてご質問を受け、

わかる範囲でご紹介させていただきました。

現在野生のパンダの数は1600頭まで回復しましたが、
これで安全と言えるレベルにはまだまだ至っていません。

800万年前から生息するパンダは「生きた化石」とも言われ、
現在でも謎の多い動物の一つと言われています。
野生パンダの生息地、彼らの起源や進化、また生態については
様々な研究が行われていますが、解明されていないことも多いのです。

1980年代、野生のパンダの数は1000頭まで激減しました。
主な原因は、パンダが日常口にする竹の種類が
激減してしまったことなのですが、このままではパンダが
絶滅してしまうと危惧した中国政府が介入し、
1987年に成都パンダ繁殖育成研究基地が設立されました。

弱っていた野生のパンダ6頭を保護し、
今では世界中で飼育環境下にいるパンダの数は300を超えました。
DNAの多様性を図るため定期的に野生のパンダの精子を確保し、
繁殖に利用してもいますが、それでも同じパンダの子孫が
増えすぎてしまっていることが問題になっています。
繁殖に優れたパンダとそうでないパンダがおり、
全てのパンダに平等に繁殖の機会を与えたいと
思ってもそうはいかないのが現実です。
とはいえ、飼育環境下のパンダの繁殖成功率と出産率、
生存率が年々伸びていることは事実で、
成都パンダ繁殖育成研究基地の功績なくしては
成し遂げられなかったことです。今後彼らの研究を
通じて、更に改善されていくことは沢山あると思います。

また、現在野生パンダの数を増やすために
「野生パンダ保護区」が設けられ、一般の人が
立ち入ることも自然を破壊することも出来ないようになっています。
野生のパンダは視力はあまり良くないのですが、
匂いには敏感で、人間や知らない匂いを感じた場合には
逃げてしまいます。彼らが平和に暮らしていくためには、
極力人間が立ち入らず、そっとしてあげることが一番だと言えます。
野生パンダの数を確保するには、これ以上自然を破壊せず、
パンダが安心して暮らしていける場所を残していくことが
重要なポイントとなります。豊富な竹と水のある広大な土地で
彼らは安心して暮らしていけるのです。
もともと繁殖の季節以外は単体で行動するパンダは
縄張り意識も強く、広大な土地が必要なのです。

野生パンダを保護していくこと、そして飼育環境下のパンダの数を
増やしていくことは今後パンダを守っていくための必須条件と言えます。
その上で今後人間は様々な研究を重ね、
いつか飼育環境下のパンダを野生に帰し、
彼らがまた子孫を残していくことが出来れば、これ以上の
喜びはないと思います。
飼育環境下のパンダを野生に帰すには、
これからまだまだ沢山の課題が残されています。
飼育環境に慣れてしまったパンダが野生で生きていけるのか？
自力で食べ物を探し、敵を見分ける能力をどのように身につけさせるのか？
事実、飼育環境下で育ったパンダを野生に帰し、
数か月で死んでしまった悲しい過去の事例もあります。
彼の死を無駄にしないためにも、これから人間がパンダのために
しなければならないことは沢山あるのです。

パンダは可愛い生き物で、
見ているだけで癒されると思う方も多いと思います。

しかし、彼らのおかれる厳しい現実を考えた時、
彼らを保護するために私達には
何が出来るだろうか？と考えてみるのも大切だと思います。

ブログを読んでくださっている皆様に
厳しい現実も知っていただきたいと思い、
本日は少し深刻な問題について書かせていただきました。

今後、皆様の疑問にもお答えしていきたいと思っています。
ご質問などあれば、書き込みをお願い致します。

最後に私事ではありますが。
今日11月14日は、私の大切に想っていた黒ラブ愛犬ももの
誕生日です。彼女は昨年癌で亡くなりましたが、
今でも私の近くでいつも見守ってくれています。
今回私がパンダプロジェクトに参加しようと決意した
大きなきっかけは、彼女が作ってくれました。
動物を救うために私にも出来ることがあるのではないか？
厳しい現実を、ただ見ているだけで良いのか？
そんなことを毎日考えていた時、このプロジェクトに出会いました。
彼女の死は今でも私にとって思い出すだけで辛い出来事でしたが、
彼女の存在なくしてはここまで来られなかったと思います。
毎日大好きなパンダと触れ合い、動物のもたらしてくれる癒しや
幸せを実感しつつも、彼女のことを思い出さない日はありません。
パンダとは全く関係ありませんが、
私を支えてくれる存在として今日はブログに書かせていただきました。

Hello everyone!

Toady I went to visit the number 2 enclosure.
6 Pandas live in this area,
MeiLan from USA (Can't find her Chinese Character!),
雄浜(Xiong Bang) and 隆浜(Long Bang) from Japan,
three 2 year old Pandas,迎迎(IngIng),
NiNi,and 奇福(QiFu).奇福(QiFu) is one of the
grandchildren of 梅梅(MeiMei).

At the number 2 enclosure, the
keepers stay overnight in turns,
and they keep an eye on all the Pandas who live here.
They are treated like prince and princesses!
This is prince 隆浜(Long Bang) saying "Hi"

"Hi"
He puts his long nose between the bars,
just like his twin brother 秋浜(Qiu Bang).
He has cute eyelids, if you can see, and he is
handsome!

"I'm waiting for fresh bamboo, is it ready now?"

"I need it now!!!"

"Yummy!"
He didn't eat Panda Cakes nor apples today,
and the keeper told me that he will have them
at night with 隆浜's favorite honey.

Prince 雄浜(Xiong Bang) waiting for the keeper to
call him inside.

The keeper gave him apples and Panda Cakes,
and 雄浜 went straight to the apples.

"HaHaHa, apples are my favorite!"

But he ignored the Panda Cakes today.
The keeper will give them to him
at night. 雄浜(Xiong Bang) and 隆浜(Long Bang)
are so different from
幸浜(Xing Bang) and 秋浜(Qiu Bang)!
Maybe they need some attention from the keepers,
and the keepers are all taking care of them
so well.

and the way she acts is like a princess!!
She holds the Panda Cakes
with her hands carefully.
By the way,雄浜(Xiong Bang) or 隆浜(Long Bang)
might be her future husband...

迎迎(IngIng) is NiNi's twin brother
and is always crying with a cute voice.
A few weeks ago, he fell off a tree
and was in a serious comma, but now he is
healthy and is back to normal.

迎迎(IngIng) has long eyelashes.
It's his trademark and charm point!
